I don't know how any of it works. But they talk to you, don't they? Stuff like "I'll lend you my power" even though they're gods or demons or whatever. That sort of thing won't come free.
Yeah, it's shady. It's like the demons holding you to this contract, but you're not the one who signed it. Got to play by the rules, though, or they'll probably kill you.
